Friday to Sunday 5-7 June was a very busy, but successful weekend where two athletics and other social events were held in Carmarthen and Neath:

Dyfed Schools: The action got underway on Friday evening where 7 events were held ahead of the big day on Saturday. The first Dyfed Schools record of the 2015 Dyfed Secondary Schools Athletics Championships was broken by Christian Lovatt (Dyffryn Aman) in the Senior Boys 3000m where he recorded a time of 8.40.8.

For the schools athletes and teachers, all roads from Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire led to the Carmarthen Leisure Centre early on Saturday where events began at 10am on the field with the first hurdles heats a short time after.

Further records were broken throughout the afternoon including the following: Iwan Glynn (Bro Myrddin) Y7 1500m 4.52.4, Lucy Davies (Dyffryn Taf) MG 1500S/C 6.02.9 and Rachel Donnison (Penglais) SW 400m 57.9. There were also great performances by all the harriers members who for one day only were competing against each other rather than with another.

We are at the forefront of the sport in Wales and for that we can thank the talents of the pupils in the Dyfed schools, the commitment and skill of the teaching PE departments throughout the three counties and the support many receive from coaches in the athletics clubs. Our thanks go to all the officials, teachers and helpers who made sure that the event ran smoothly and on time, in front of and behind the scenes (some who worked tirelessly for 10 hours) including: judges, Welsh Athletics officials (John Elward, Sue Alvey, Brian Alvey, Andrew Jenkins,) St John Ambulance, Leisure Centre Staff and the Carmarthen Harriers parents on refreshments and administration duties. Also to a number of the Pembrokeshire Harriers members and officials who supported the event in any way. The meeting could not have gone ahead without these people.

The Dyfed team for the Welsh Schools Track and Field Championships to be held, once again as part of the Urdd's Gemau Cymru sporting weekend on Saturday July 4th, was chosen straight after the Dyfed Championships and letters have been posted to all athletes selected. All replies slips must be sent back straight away, as reserves can be called in if an athlete is unavailable.

Louise Arthur: The theme of perfect weather conditions for athletics running continued at the Cwrt Herbert Sports Centre track on Sunday in Neath. After competing the day before, over 20 athletes from Carmarthen, who were joined by many other juniors, travelled up the M4 to Neath for the second round of this year's U15 Louise Arthur League. On a warm day, 68 from the club were present, and once again there was another great performance from the team and all contributed towards vital points (too many individuals and athletes to pick out from)

After a brilliant start to the campaign at the home match, the youngsters turned out in numbers to compete, ensuring that it was another brilliant third position out of the nine clubs, finishing behind Swansea and Pembrokeshire, scoring a total of 1000 points (prov) throughout the day. There were also numerous new personal bests recorded. With 2 matches to go, the club is on course to get to the Welsh cup final in August.

A big thank you to all parents for their support throughout the weekend which has had many big highlights and encouraging performances and results.

Once again in 2015, Carmarthen Harriers Athletics Club were delighted to welcome and host a group of young athletes and their team managers from Melbourne in Australia. This was the 13th year in succession and the 32nd year overall for them to be visiting West Wales, where they stayed for 4 days. After arriving on Thursday evening 4th, the Aussies had a busy and exciting few days. Friday saw them visit school with their host, at Ysgol Y Preseli, Ysgol Bro Myrddin and Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, where they had the opportunity to learn Welsh. The group and Carmarthen Harriers athletes and parents met up at Xcel Bowling in Johnstown in the evening after p1 of the Schools athletics for fun and to enjoy each other's company. The weekend then saw the boys compete as guests at the two competitions in Carmarthen and Neath. They left Wales on Monday morning to head into England and continue on their tour which lasts eight weeks. The visit to Carmarthen is always the highlight.

On behalf of the full Australian team, lead team manager Neville Sillitoe thanked everybody within Dyfed Schools and Carmarthen Harriers for their warm welcome once again:

"Once again it has been a wonderful pleasure to be back visiting Carmarthen and to attend these great athletics meetings which has had a terrific response from athletes and officials. Our sincere thanks to all the host families and everyone at Carmarthen Harriers Athletics Club who has helped and looked after us over the last few days. We wish everyone in Carmarthen, Dyfed and Welsh Athletics a successful season and I hope to be back next year. Thank you very much."

Sincere thanks to the athletes and parents of Ryan Thomas (Liam Tully) Gareth Thompson (Darcy Edgerton, Cooper Stephens) Frank / Maddie Morgan (Jayden Curtis) Archi Morgan (Cooper Saunders) and Tomos Rees (Isaac Warren) for hosting the athletes and helping to make the visit to Carmarthen an enjoyable experience for our visitors.
