The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia was one of the main highlights to name over the summer as Welsh athletes were concerned, as Josh Griffiths and Caryl Jones were involved in the final athletics event, the marathon in very warm conditions out on the streets out down under. Griffiths shocked himself and others after crossing as the first Brit at the London Marathon in 2017 to secure his place on the start line, where he finished in fifteenth with 2:37:01. On the other hand, Jones also showed great determination in what was described as the hardest conditions ever! She clocked 2:43:58 for eighth.

Dewi Griffiths, coached by our very own Kevin Evans on the other hand has been dominating on the road and a popular figure for several years in West Wales on the track, cross country and road circuits. In latest news, he won the Cardiff 10K at the beginning of September and led a strong Welsh contingent, finishing ninth at the recent Cardiff Half Marathon. It was this year that Griffiths ran a quick time of 2:09:49 in his first marathon at Frankfurt. After being on the sidelines for a number of months earlier this year due to injury, ruling himself out of the Gold Coast Games, the Llanfynnydd, Carmarthenshire athlete is getting back to fine form.

European Youth 1500m champion and Cardiff AAC's Jake Heyward has also been in action over the summer, in top form in the 1500m. He represented Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in Finland back in mid July finishing fourth. This was followed by a personal best run of 3:36:90 at the London Stadium Anniversary Games a few weeks later knocking three seconds off his previous best. Last weekend, Heyward kicked off the cross country season with a dominant display at the British Athletics Cardiff Cross Challenge. With a group of around eight athletes neck and neck heading into the final lap, Heyward broke away to win with ease in his home city.

Claire Williams, having began at the club at the age of 11 is now one of our throws coaches at the club and is great to see the young throwers progressing thanks to her guidance. She's the Dyfed schools and under 17, 20 and senior club record for many years. She competed in the Paralympic T12 throwing events in three Games (2004 Athens); 2008 (Beijing) and London 2012. At London, she took the bronze medal in the discus with a best throw of 39.63m.
