EVENT 1: WELSH ATHLETICS ROAD RELAYS CHAMPIONSHIPS - SAT 22ND SEPTEMBER

Following its great success and popular turnout in September 2017, the Welsh Athletics Road Relays Championships will be returning to Pembrey Country Park once again this autumn on Saturday 22nd September 2018 organised by Welsh Athletics in conjunction with Carmarthenshire County Council and Carmarthen Harriers.

Pontypridd and Llandow have been past venues of the Welsh Athletics Road Relays Championships in recent years and for the first time in 2017, it went to the park in Carmarthenshire where 150 teams had entered and participated.

The races act as a preparation for clubs that will be contesting the British Road Relay Championships (formerly ERRA National Road Relay Championships) in early October.

It provides the chance for both established and up and coming endurance runners in Wales to compete against each other in a competitive team format. Races will include a primary school challenge, full junior (U13, U15, U17, U20) programme, men's, women's and Master's races - the under 13 and senior age group in a team of four, while all the others as a trio of athletes.

The course will take runners on a scenic and traffic free route around Pembrey Country Park with an out and back format.

Swansea Harriers came out on top in the senior categories the last time out. Carmarthenshire favourites Dewi Griffiths and Josh Griffiths helped their A team take gold by a comfortable margin. A strong turnout from those wearing white and green saw them also take silver medals thanks to their B team, while 2016 runners up Cardiff AAC had to settle for bronze. Swansea's women also won with ease for a successive year from their rivals by nearly 7 minutes.

Lliswerry Runners, Amman Valley Harriers, Parc Bryn Bach, Newport Harriers, Port Talbot Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Swansea Harriers, Llanelli AC, Aberdare VAAC, Bridgend AC and Neath Harriers were the other remaining Senior category victors.

Carmarthen Harriers, Cardiff AAC, Menai Track & Field, Brecon AC, Newport Harriers, Blaenau Gwent AC, Swansea Harriers and Llanelli AC all took home junior medals across the under 11 to under 20 age ranges.

The event will hope to attract even more competitors this time round. Full event details and entry information will follow shortly!

EVENT 2: GWENT CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE FIXTURE 2 - SAT 10TH NOVEMBER

The Gwent Cross Country League will visit Pembrey Country Park for the third year in succession at the beginning of November on Saturday 10th of November 2018.

The league - formed in 1963 has continued across South Wales and the South West of England every year since then and attracts the best cross country runners from Wales and England.

It is a league that has taken place for many many years and it is a good way of making new friends from other clubs.

With races featuring the under 11 athletes right up to the seniors and masters categories, more than 800 athletes of all abilities and experience will be expected, as well as a big turnout of spectators from all over Wales and the South West of England for the latest fixture of an exciting league.

Many Gwent League cross country matches hosted by Carmarthen Harriers had been held in the past on the United Counties Showground fields in Nantyci. Carmarthen Harriers will be working in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council once again in 2018 having done so over the last two occasions too.

EVENT 3: 115th WELSH ATHLETICS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS - SAT 23RD FEBRUARY

Welsh Athletics are pleased to announce that the 2019 Welsh Cross-Country Championships will be held at Pembrey Country Park in Carmarthenshire on Saturday 23rd February 2018. The park has built a strong reputation for major sporting events in recent years, including athletics, cross country and all-terrain cycling, and last year played host to a successful Gwent Cross Country League which drew a huge crowd of runners and spectators.

Alex Donald, Event Delivery Lead for Endurance events at Welsh Athletics, said: "We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council to bring our flagship Cross Country event to West Wales next year. Pembrey provides the ideal setting and great facilities to host the race, and athletes can expect a fun, scenic and challenging course around the park. The Welsh Cross Country Championships has a rich history and we're looking forward to seeing our top endurance athletes across all age groups come here to test themselves and compete for National honours next February."

Present at the launch of the event in Pembrey Country Park last week were Carmarthenshire based athletes Ben Thomas (having competed at the European Youth Championships earlier this month), Caryl Jones (Gold Coast Marathon Representative) and Dewi Griffiths (Multiple-time Great Britain Representative and Welsh Cross-Country Champion).

"Pembrey Country Park is on my doorstep so is an ideal place to train," said Caryl. "I'm excited about this partnership which will see more major athletics events held here in Carmarthenshire."

Ben Thomas added: "The landscape and facilities that the park offers makes it a great venue for cross country championships. It will be great to have home advantage and the support of a local crowd during these competitions, I'm really looking forward to it."

Cllr Peter Hughes-Griffiths, Carmarthenshire County Council's Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: "Pembrey Country Park is fast becoming the major sporting venue in Wales and we are delighted to have secured this commitment from Welsh Athletics which will attract huge numbers to the park. This is an exciting development, which - alongside the fantastic cycling opportunities we are bringing to the Park - really puts Carmarthenshire first place on the map for sporting events."
