For a successive year, Elite Welsh and Club Runners are heading for one of Carmarthenshire's most popular open spaces. Announced as the first leg of the Tour of Britain Cycling event on the 2nd of September, Pembrey Country Park near Llanelli will again be hosting the Welsh Athletics Road Relay Championships 2018 this September.

It is being hailed as a great opportunity to showcase the county's athletic talent against Wales' best. The event provides the chance for both established and up and coming endurance runners in Wales to compete against each other in a competitive team format. Races include a primary school challenge, full junior programme, men's, women's and veteran's races. The event will hope to attract even more competitors this time round.

Swansea Harriers, Cardiff AAC, Lliswerry Runners, Amman Valley Harriers, Parc Bryn Bach, Newport Harriers, Port Talbot Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Llanelli AC, Aberdare VAAC, Bridgend AC and Neath Harriers took senior category victories last year.

Whilst taking home junior medals across the under 11 to under 20 age ranges were Carmarthen Harriers, Cardiff AAC, Menai Track and Field, Brecon AC, Newport Harriers, Blaenau Gwent AC, Swansea Harriers and Llanelli AC.

The 2018 Welsh Road Relay Championships takes place at Pembrey on Saturday 22nd September. The park situated near Llanelli provides a stunning backdrop for the event which has utilised several venues in recent years.

Pembrey Country Park has been transformed into one of Wales' top visitor attractions providing a unique blend of coast and countryside. Eight-miles of golden sands set against the spectatuclar backdrop of Gower and overlooking the coastal scenery of Carmarthen Bay.

The races act as a preparation for clubs that will be contesting the British Road Relay Championships in early October.

Over a number of years, Previously it has been held in Llandow and Pontypridd park with a new venue for the last two years when it arrives in West Wales. It will be organised by Welsh Athletics in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council. Gwent League Cross Country League and the Welsh Cross Country Championships are other races that have already been confirmed at Pembrey over the course of the upcoming winter season.

 

 

AGE GROUPS / GRWPIAU OEDRAN

Age groups will follow UK athletics rules, and club vests must be worn in championship races.

Age Limites for the Primary Challenge Races

Competition is confined to competitors in Primary School year 5 or 6 on the day of competition.

Under 13 Boys and Girls (School Year 7 & 8 some year 6)

Road Running competitions for under 13s shall be confined to competitors who are age 11 on the day of competition, or 12 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the competition Year as defined above.

Under 15 Boys and Girls (School Year 9 & 10)

Road Running competitions for under 15s shall be confined to competitors who are aged 13 or 14 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the competition Year as defined above.

Under 17 Men and Women (School Year 11 & 12)

Road Running competitons for under 17s shall be confined to competitors who are aged 15 or 16 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the competition Year as defined above.

Senior Men and Women (Under 20 athletes competes as seniors in senior teams)

Road Running competitions for senior men and women shall be confined to competitors who are at least 20 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the competition year as defined above.

Masters Men and Women

Road Running events for men and women shall be confined to competitors who are at least 35 years of age on the day of the competition.

 

RACE HQ & FACILITIES

Race HQ is based near Ski Pembrey (SA16 0EJ). There will be hot and cold refreshments on sale and full toilet facilities. Limited changing facilities are available at the Pembrey Ski Centre. There will be space near the changeover area for club tents. First Aid for the day will be based from this position, and deployed when required.

 

COURSE INFORMATION

The relay route is on tarmac traffic free roads and paths around the national closed road cycling circuit and surrounding parkland. There are a number of small tarmac speed bumps positioned on the loop. These will be sign posted and chalk will identify them at floor level.

It has been designed so that runners only need to complete one loop each before handing over to a team member.

There is good visibility of approaching runners from the change-over area. It is the athletes responsibility to familiarise themselves with the course prior to their race

Marshals will be positioned around the course and will make every effort to inform pedestrians of the event, however please be aware of other park users.

Please listen to PA announcements for information throughout the day. Runners need to be on start line at least 10 minutes before run time.

Athletes are requested NOT to warm up on the race route. There are ample alternative paths in the park or grass surface.

 

PRESENTATIONS / GWOBRAU

Presentations will be made near the HQ/changeover as soon as possible following each event.

 

TRANSPORT / TRAFNIDIAETH

Junction 47 (Penllegaer) travelling along the A484 near Loughor or Junction 48 (Hendy) heading towards Llanelli are the junctions to take on the M4 motorway.

The park entrance is located on the A484 between Burry Port and Kidwelly and clearly signed as you pass through Llanelli (coming East) and Carmarthen (coming West). Sat Nav: SA16 0EJ

 

PARKING / PARCIO

Parking is available on site, using several car parks. They will be clearly signed and will be managed by Pembrey Country Park Staff. It is advised to arrive early and allow enough time to travel from the motorway to park and get to the start on time.

PLEASE NOTE: It is a £2.00 charge per car to enter the park before 9am and £5.00 charge per care to enter the park after 9am; follow the signs around and you will arrive at the car park indicated.

11.30am: Primary Schools/U11 Boys - Ysgolion Cynradd/O Dan 11 Bechgyn (1540 metres/metr)

11.45am: Primary Schools/U11 Girls - Ysgolion Cynradd/O Dan 11 Merched (1540 metres/metr)

12.00 noon: Under 13 Boys & Girls - Bechgyn a Merched O Dan 13 (4 legs of 1,900 metres/metr)

12.50pm: Under 15 Boys & Girls - Bechgyn a Merched O Dan 15 (3 legs of 3,200 metres/metr)

12.50pm: Under 17 Boys & Girls - Bechgyn a Merched O Dan 17 (3 legs of 3,200 metres/metr)

1.50pm: Senior Men & Senior Women - Bechgyn a Merched Hyn (4 legs of 5,400 metres/metr)

1.50pm: Masters Men 35+, 45+, 55+ & Masters Women 35+, 45+, 55+ (3 legs of 5,400 metres/metr)

 

* Primary School Races will be run as one 1,540m race as opposed to relay format. Primary School pupils in Years 5 and 6 (School year 2018/19) are eligible to compete in the Primary School Boys and Girls races. *

 

Carmarthen Harriers club: Entries have now closed and teams have been finalized.

There will be no coach on this occasion therefore all athletes are asked to make their own way to Pembrey. Anyone with transport issues, let the team managers know and a lift can be sorted.
