Just a week after an action-packed Welsh Athletics Junior Championships over at Newport, the Welsh Junior League / Louise Arthur League headed into its second half of the campaign with round 3 of four fixtures at Penlan Arena, Brecon and Spytty Stadium, Newport earlier on Saturday 30th June. The league so far has seen visits to Carmarthen, Hereford, Neath and Cardiff.

The Louise Arthur League has gone from strength to strength and was again evident in Mid and East Wales, with around 400 athletes competing in each event. It's gave children of all ages between under 11, under 13 and under 15 age groups the opportunity to compete in a friendly league alongside other runners from across South and Mid Wales. Split into two leagues, there's the West and East divisions. All the track and field disciplines available for junior athletes were open as usual with athletes allowed to do up to three events each including the relay.

Following a warm week of weather right across Wales, this continued into the weekend including Saturday when the two events took place, with temperatures soaring into the mid to high 20's for the majority of the afternoon.

For the East match, Aberdare VAAC, Blaenau Gwent AC, Cardiff Archers, Cardiff AAC, Cwmbran Harriers, Hereford & County, Newport Harriers, Rhondda AC and Rhymney Valley AC went to the Spytty Stadium, Newport. Cardiff Archers, Cardiff AAC, and Newport Harriers fielded strong teams once again. Many went back to the East Wales venue on familiar territory, having competed for medals there last weekend in similar conditions.

With clubs having travelled further North, the Brecon AC track in Penlan Arena was the venue for the West Division match where the vests of Pembrokeshire Harriers, Swansea Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Neath Harriers, Brecon AC, Bridgend AC, Llanelli AC, Barry & Vale and Pontyclun AC were out on show. Swansea Harriers having won the first three matches and are set on course to challenge the two Cardiff clubs in a repeat of last year's cup final.

In perfect conditions over a six hour timetable, another turnout of hundreds of athletes, spectators and officials made it an enjoyable day for all and our thanks as usual to all the officials and club volunteers who gave up their time to ensure that the children could get their opportunity to take part.

There's only one round left to go at the end of July, and they will be hosted by Swansea Harriers and Cwmbran Harriers. At the end of the league campaign next month, all clubs will go forward to the cup and plate finals to be held this year at Swansea University track in mid August..
