Our final club/school match for the 2018 summer season at the Carmarthen track saw the Dyfed Schools NASUWT Cup Final moved to Johnstown earlier on Wednesday as five schools book their places in Brecon! We were there covering the event online for those unable to be in attendance and looking for updates.

1 District, 4 Areas, 4 NASUWT Cup Qualifiers, 4 venues...all came down to 1 Cup Final with thirty two teams present and ready for battle.

Only four days after the Dyfed Secondary Schools Athletics Championships were held over two days, the Schools District's NASUWT Cup Final Match soon came around rapidly and also headed to the Carmarthen Leisure Centre Athletics Track in Johnstown earlier today (Wednesday 20th June). It was moved from the usual location of Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest in order for the discus competition to go ahead as planned in a full programme of events.

In the Dyfed district over the past month, all four areas (Brianne, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Llanelli) hosted an area qualifier each at Carmarthen, Pemberton and Haverfordwest. The top two teams in each of the four age groups sent teams to the big showdown in the town of Carmarthen, all aiming to qualify for the Welsh Schools NASUWT Cymru Wales Cup & Plate Finals in Brecon this July.

The boys and girls' age groups were split into under 14 (year 7 and 8) and under 16 (year 9 and 10).

The event programme was over three hours with the first event at 11.00am at the Leisure Centre facility. The final relay concluded the day just before 2pm and saw the hurdles, 100m, 200m, 300m, 800m, and 1500m on the track. While on the field, the javelin, shot, long jump, high jump, triple jump and discus was contested.

During the day, we saw several great races and performances as well as great team efforts with a number of the best athletes from the Dyfed district out on show. Looking at team scores, several categories came down to the last few races including the very last relay race, so everything was to play for up to the very last few metres. Schools from Queen Elizabeth, Bro Myrddin, Dyffryn Taf, Dyffryn Aman, Bro Dinefwr, Maes Y Gwendraeth, STP, Preseli, Greenhill, Penglais, Aberaeron, Bro Pedr, Henry Richard, Bryngwyn, Strade, Coedcae and St John Lloyd were all top 2 team finishers in their respective matches earlier on and as a result, travelled from all three counties to take part in this midweek fixture.
