There was plenty of local talent and future school stars out on show during the four meetings with over 400 youngsters taking part.

A few days before the West Wales Championships on Thursday 10th May, the track at Johnstown leisure centre hosted the first of two at the venue, the Brianne area championships which was first to take place. Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Ysgol Maes Y Gwendraeth, Ysgol Bro Myrddin, Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, Queen Elizabeth School and Llandovery College were the seven represented.

No more than 24 hours later further up the A484 at Pemberton on Friday 11th May, the six Llanelli schools from Ysgol Y Strade, Coedcae School, Bryngwyn School, St John Lloyd School, St Michaels School and Glan Y Mor School headed to the home of Llanelli Athletics Club.

On Wednesday 16th May, St Thomas Picton School in Haverfordwest (where Pembrokeshire Harriers also train), was the venue for all the Pembrokeshire schools: St Thomas Picton School, Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Ysgol Greenhill, Pembroke School, Tasker Milward School, Ysgol Y Preseli, Milford Haven School and Ysgol Dewi Sant.

Then finally a week later on Wednesday 23rd May on one of the warmest days of the summer so far, 8 Ceredigion schools travelled south for their match using the facilities at Carmarthen. Children in action earlier in midweek were from Ysgol Henry Richard, Ysgol Bro Pedr, Ysgol Penweddig, Ysgol Penglais, Ysgol Aberteifi, Ysgol Aberaeron, Ysgol Bro Teifi and Ysgol Emlyn.

Events varied in each fixture and age group over sprinting & middle distance as well as the popular field disciplines that were on offer. The standard of competition was very high with many encouraging performances shown with a few school records broken in the process. Everyone was very lucky with the weather conditions throughout with very little rain around despite the strong wind at times for the throwers and sprinters!

Schools will be / have been in action at the NASUWT Cup competition with the final to be held in Haverfordwest. Llanelli schools have already held their event with Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Brianne to come by the middle of June. The district's final down in STP will be held on Wednesday 20th June with the Welsh national final to come in Brecon in mid July.

Thanks to all the teachers and club volunteers on hand at any of the four events to make sure that the area championships were again a great success and giving the children the opportunity to get involved in grass roots sport.
