The 37th running of the Carmarthen Mayor's Races returns to the town centre on May Day Bank Holiday, 7th of May. The whole family can get involved...with races for children and seniors! We'll be covering the event in full again this year!

Now in its 37th year, the Carmarthen Mayor's Race attracts over 800 runners between 3 and 80 every year. Great series of Junior Races and a 5k for the adults. Chip Timing again at these races.

Nawr yn dathlu 37 mlynedd, mae Rasys Y Maer yn deni dros 800 o rhedwyr rhwng 3 a 80 mlwydd oed. Cyfres o rasys i blant a ras 5k i oedolion.

The Mayor's Races has gone from strength to strength in the last 36 years, with 25 Welsh road race championships having been held in conjunction within the race in the period 1982 to 2006.

The beauty of the Carmarthen Mayor's Races Fun Run is that they take place in the heart of the town centre, affording great opportunities to cheer on the runners. The event raises thousands of pounds for charity with many local groups and organisations benefiting.

A total of 312 registered the 5K this time last year with entrants from local and afar, as well as hundreds of young children and juniors ran in their respective school year age groups around the town centre streets with a grand stand finish in the middle of Lammas Street, Carmarthen.

On May 1st 2017 when the races were put on in 2017, there were children category wins for Gwennan Fflur Jones (Y Dderwen); Logan MacKenzie-Jones (Y Fro); Mared Jones (Y Dderwen); Liam Upton-Boorman (Johnstown); Keira Carmody (Model); Ifan Bowen (Y Dderwen); Amy Tucker (St John Lloyd) and Liam Edwards (Bro Myrddin). Elsewhere, Bro Myrddin's Thomas Jones was the 5k winner with a time of 16 minutes and 56 seconds.

The races will start at the Guildhall Square at Carmarthen with registration held at St Peter's Civic Hall. (see entering details below)

The day gets underway with the Senior 5K fun run at 10.00am which all athletes will be able to get their own time through chip timing, and is followed by a series of junior races for the following 2 hours. The Year 1 and 2 set things off before moving up year 3, 4, 5 and 6 before there's a secondary school year 7 and 8 race to conclude the day's programme (2 laps each race). At the end, they'll be the chance for those 6 years and under to run a lap of the course hand in hand with their parents and families. As with the junior races, their reward will be their very own medal to take away.

The same routes will be in place for 2018 as has been the case for the last couple of years.

All finishers receive their very own finishers medal and the Mayor will be on hand to help present the awards throughout the day. There'll be trophies for the top 3 in each age group as well as the following awards in the main 5K race: Males under 40, V40+, V50+, V60+, Females under 35, V35+, V45+, V55+, Best Fancy Dress, 1st Relay Team and 1st Corporate Team.

A big thanks to organiser Noelwyn Davies (Healthy Life Activities) who will be getting everything in place along with all the volunteers, marshals and staff from Carmarthenshire Town Council. It's set to be another bumper turnout from runners and spectators alike!
