The Dyfed Secondary Schools Relays Competition, Afan Nedd Tawe Schools & Colleges Championships & Carmarthenshire Primary Schools Athletics Championships returns to Carmarthen & Swansea in April and May...


Following an extremely busy winter months of cross country and indoor action up and down the county, the schools summer athletics season will be getting underway at Carmarthen Leisure Centre and Swansea University Athletics Track very soon after the Easter holidays.

The first school track and field event of the 2018 summer will be the Dyfed Secondary Schools Relays Competition at Carmarthen Leisure Centre on Wednesday afternoon, 25th April. Start: 16.30pm. Schools from Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion have been invited to send teams.

Events will include 4 x 100m sprint relays, 4 x 200m sprint relays and 800m individual races commencing at 16.30pm. The presentation of awards to winning teams/individuals and to winning school will be made following the action.

Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Ammanford are the reigning champions and will be looking for another strong performance to retain their title. Last year, Ysgol Bro Dinefwr came through to take runner up spot with local school, Queen Elizabeth claiming third.



16:30 4 x 100m Relay All Age Groups Year 7 to 13 / Ras Gyfnewid 4 x 100 metr i bob oedran blwyddyn 7 i 13.

Event Order / Trefn Rasys:

Boys / Bechgyn: Y7, Y8/9, Y10/11, Y12/13

Girls / Merched: Y7, Y8/9, Y10/11, Y12/13

17:30: 800 metres individual events all year groups / 800 metr i unigolion bob oedran.

18:15: 4 x 200m Relay All Age Groups Year 7 to 13 / Ras Gyfnewid 4 x 200 metr i bob oedran blwyddyn 7 i 13

The Apollo Teaching Services Afan Nedd Tawe Schools & Colleges Athletics Track & Field Championships heads back to Swansea University Athletics Track on Wednesday 2nd May with a full programme of events to be held over the day.

Twenty-Six schools and colleges across the district have been invited to send teams to the opening fixture of the school' season in the Swansea and Neath Port Talbot area.

The track events start at 10.00am in the morning with the distance hurdles before moving onto the distance and sprint races for all age groups. The Final competition for all distances will be the penultimate events of the afternoon before the sprint relays rounds things off.

Likewise, the field will also be busy throughout with the events starting at 10.00am, shot, discus and high jump starts off and finishing at 4.45pm with the hammer.

For primary school children, their first opportunity to impress on the big stage will be a fortnight later on Wednesday 9th May when attention turns to the Carmarthenshire Primary Schools Athletics Championships.

The championships will once again be sponsored by McDonalds.

Starting at 17:00pm, events taking place will be: 70m Hurdles, 100m sprint, 800m, 4 x 100m sprint relay, long jump, high jump and shot put.

All schools should return the reply slip to Hedydd Davies by Friday 27th April 2018.


1. A competitor may only compete in 1 track or 1 field event and the relay.

2. Schools can enter up to 4 competitors for the 100m, 70m hurdles, 800m and only 1 competitor per school for the long jump, high jump and shot put events.

3. Medals will be awarded to the first 3 in each competition.

These championships also attract big numbers of schools, pupils and spectators alike and the same is expected this year. It was Ysgol Y Dderwen who narrowly won the trophy in 2017 just ahead of Ysgol Iau Llangennech and Ysgol Griffith Jones out of 24 scoring teams. Who's going to take it this year on 9th May?
