COURSE 1: UK Athletics Assistant Officials Qualifications (SATURDAY 24TH MARCH) 1PM - 4PM

Anyone aged 14 or over interested in gaining an insight and introduction to the key areas of officiating that will enable them to assist at track and field meetings under the supervision of a qualified UKA Technical Official.

Delivered as a single workshop of four hours in six sections with both theoretical and practical elements covering:

- The responsibilities and role of an Assistant Official

- Measuring and recording times and distances

- Making, sharing and recording judgements

- Ensuring safety and reporting concerns

- Communicating with athletes and other officials

- Following procedures and applying basic rules


After completing the course, candidates will need to:

- Gain experience by attending a minimum of two athletics meetings assisting a qualified Official.

- Complete a Recorded Evidence Form detailing each meeting and have this signed by a qualified UKA Technical Official (These experiences can also be gained at schools' athletics meetings, signed off by the appropriate teacher.)

- Undertake a DBS check, if aged 16 or over, or if under 16 make a Self Declaration.

- A level 1 Assistant Officials' Licence will then be issued.

COURSE 2: Leading Athletics Coaching Certificate (SUNDAY 25TH MARCH) 1PM - 4PM

There will be a Leading Athletics Coaching Certificate at Swansea, this new leadership workshop is for those looking to lead athletics activities for young athletes.

Packed full of useful tips and ideas, this three hour workshop is supported by a workbook, support resource and a series of game cards which aid delivery. The resources include information on the roles and responsibilities of a leader, how to lead a fun and inclusive athletics session, and further information on how to develop your leadership skills.

The workshop which is open to volunteers from all clubs, schools and leisure centres. The course costs £25 and there is a closing date for applications of Monday 19th March, with a minimum age for attendance is 14. COURSE 3: Level 1 Field Official Course & Health & Safety Course (THURSDAY 29TH MARCH) 6PM - 8PM

The club needs you! We need to have qualified Officials to help out at its League Fixtures this summer, and is the perfect opportunities for older athletes, parents and coaches to gain experience with this Level 1 Field Official Course & Health & Safety Course at Carmarthen Leisure Centre on Thursday 29th March between 6pm and 8pm.

It will enable individuals to work with other qualified officials, acting as a lead official and supporting assistant officials, whilst judging at athletics events.

The course will help to: gain knowledge, develop skills and apply rules in officiating in athletics.

The course will introduce the individual to judging; help recognise the skills and qualities of a good official and help develop those skills. Importantly, this element develops an awareness of the importance of Health and Safety and helps the applicant to undertake a Health and Safety risk assessment.

No prior experience needed and all clubs welcome to attend.

Course 4: Photo-Finish Course (SATURDAY 7TH APRIL & SUNDAY 8TH APRIL) 10AM - 4PM

Ever wondered how the photofinish team set up, how it works and how it can be so accurate at meetings? Well, here's a rare chance...

Parents, athletes, PE students, coaching, other volunteers and spectators are all welcome to attend this session in Swansea but hurry, this short course is FREE and on a first-come first-served basis.

Two courses are proposed with the first on 7th April commencing at 10.30am at Swansea University. The course will be two hours long and will cover the UK Athletics Officials Photo-finish course.

The tutor will be Jeff Marsden and will be the starting point for any-one wishing to volunteer at a match, or wishes to gain the level 1 qualification. Experience and progression will also be explained at the course.

The second course will be held from 1.00pm until approximately 3.00pm. The purpose is to train volunteers in the setting up and use of laptops and other equipment to produce photo-finish results. This will be a "hands on" course using Welsh Athletics equipment.

The course will be run by Derek Crowder and Jeff Marsden and will be sufficient to allow for its use at matches.

Swansea Harriers are planning an Open Meeting the following day (Sunday 8th April) where attendees at the course can set up and operate the equipment.
