The big Dyfed Primary Schools Cross Country Championships returns to the United Counties Showground, Nantyci this March. Date for Your Diaries: Thursday March 15th from 4.30pm (full information here)

Your Guide to the 2018 Dyfed Primary Schools Cross Country Championships at the Showground in Nantyci in March...

The 2018 Dyfed (Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire) Primary Schools Cross Country Championships will be held at the United Counties Showground, Nantyci, Carmarthen on Thursday 15th March, first event at 4.30pm and sponsored by McDonalds Carmarthen & West Wales Freemasons Provincial Council.

There will be 8 races for the following age groups - years 3, 4, 5 and 6 (Boys and Girls)

The timetable is as follows and each event will be over a 1000m or 1200m course:

  • 4.30pm - Year 3 Girls (1000)
  • 4.45pm - Year 3 Boys (1000)
  • 5.00pm - Year 4 Girls (1000)
  • 5.15pm - Year 4 Boys (1000)
  • 5.30pm - Year 5 Girls (1200)
  • 5.40pm - Year 5 Boys (1200)
  • 5.50pm - Year 6 Girls (1200)
  • 6.00pm - Year 6 Boys (1200)


The first 10 in each race will receive medals, the first 3 teams in each race (top 3 members of school to score) and the first county. There will be an entry of £4 per team. Schools can enter any number of athletes. Car Parking is FREE for all cars/buses. Schools should return the reply slip to Mr Emyr Davies by Friday 9th March.

All Primary Schools in Dyfed have received an entry form and all the fixture details. For anyone interested in taking part, you must let your teacher know to enter a team. If there's isn't enough for a team, individuals are also welcome.

2018 INFORMATION / GWYBODAETH

Race Details for Pupils

Team managers should ensure that athletes are close to the start 10 minutes before start time. The starter and marksman will give final instructions before the start of the race.

At the finish line, each athlete will be issued with a disc showing their finishing position. As quickly as they can, athletes need to find their team manager/teachers to pass the disc on. All envelopes must be taken inside to the recorders as soon as the race is finished to count in the team score.

Race Details for Team Managers

You will need to collect your school envelopes inside the stand when you arrive. After each race, they must be returned straight away with a total of score. Envelopes that get sent back late might not be included in the final result.

First Aid

First aid cover will be provided by Carmarthen St John's Ambulance, who are likely to be based on the corner of the grandstand.

Refreshments & Toilets

Refreshments (hot and cold food and drink) will be on sale near the grandstand. Toilets are available behind the stand as located on the course map.

Presentations

Awards will be presented to the first 10 individuals in each race, the first three school teams, the winning county in each age group and the overall school winners. The presentations will be done in front of the stand at around 6.10pm.

Postcode & Directions

From the East (from Llanelli/Cross Hands/Ammanford): As you enter Carmarthen on the A48 to Pensarn Roundabout, follow the signs for the A40 St Clears and Showground is approx. 1 mile west of Carmarthen on the dual carriageway, take the slip road and go straight ahead before arriving at the entrance.

From the North (from Ceredigion/Llandeilo/Llandovery): Travel on the A40 into Carmarthen and follow signs for the A40 and A48 towards Pensarn Roundabout, follow the signs for the A40 St Clears and Showground is approx. 1 mile west of Carmarthen on the dual carriageway, take the slip road and go straight ahead before arriving at the entrance.

From the West (from Pembrokeshire): Travel to St Clears on the A40 from Haverfordwest (or A477 from Tenby & Pembroke) and follow Showground signs on dual carriageway just before reaching Carmarthen, take the slip road and go straight ahead before arriving at the entrance.

The postcode for the Showground is SA33 5DR

Health & Safety

Athletes are advised that Health & Safety regulations recommend that you should examine the course for potential hazards before competing. The course has been checked by the organisers and a risk assessment conducted. The Race Referee has inspected the course and declared it suitable for use. Any competitor who has concerns about a safety aspect on the course should bring it to the attention of the organisers and/or Race Referee immediately. If the issue cannot be resolved satisfactorily the competitor will be advised not to participate in the event.

Volunteers

We need as many helpers as possible for this event - marshals, car park assistants and with the administration side. Please get in touch if you can spare a few hours on race day.

Spectators

Everyone is welcome to attend and support the athletes - entry is free for all spectators all evening.

Car Parking & Travel

All Cars & Mini Buses / Coaches to be parked in the main car park as shown on the course map. There will be marshals on hand to help.

Schools and parents are suggested to arrive in good time, we will not be able to delay any of the races from the original timetable. Delays could be likely entering the car park after 3.30pm - marshals will be there to help you.

Results

The provisional results of the top 15 individuals, the top 10 school teams and the winning county in each age group will be available and published online www.carmarthenharriers.co.uk and on social media by 10.00pm on Thursday 15th March, with a report published before the end of the evening.

The Harriers Social Media Officer Nathan Jones will also be out tweeting and posting live online as it happens, follow the club's social media pages Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on the day of the event. 2017 Report / Adroddiad 2017

Dyfed primary schools turned out in their numbers on Thursday evening at one of the most popular sporting events currently being held in Dyfed and West Wales. A new record number of 1,453 runners from more than 80 Dyfed primary schools competed in this annual event now in its 30th year, organised by Hedydd Davies.

In the team competition, there were five different team winners: Griffith Jones, Y Dderwen, Gelli Aur, Gymraeg Aberaeron and Iau Llangennech won team events. In the inter county competition, Carmarthenshire won six races and Pembrokeshire two events.

 

Good Luck to all the athletes taking part and thanks to all those who will make the event possible. It is expected to be another brilliant afternoon of cross country running and plenty of local talent out on show.
