Three weeks after the first indoor event of the 2018 year at the Welsh Athletics Indoor Junior Open & South & East Wales & South West England at the beginning of January, attracting close to 500 participants, the last Saturday of the month this weekend (27th January) saw the National Indoor Athletics Centre at the Cyncoed Campus in Cardiff host the Welsh Athletics Senior Indoor Championships.

The fixture also incorporated a few junior championship events including the 800m and 1500m middle distance races, as well as the heats of the clubs 4 x 200m relays for under 13 and under 15 age groups. Those four teams who clocked the fastest times go forward to compete at the Welsh Athletics International on the first Sunday in March as the indoor season draws to a close for the winter season with the annual International match in Cardiff, where teams from Wales and England will be chosen.

A host of champions, Commonwealth Games and top quality athletes and fields were in action, with several big names in the sport here in Wales looking to claim glory and perform in front of a large crowd that gathered inside the Welsh capital facility at Cyncoed.

What an afternoon of racing they saw on the track and on the field events with a total of 10 disciplines to enjoy throughout the five-hour programme, including 60m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, Pole Vault, Triple Jump, High Jump, Long Jump and Shot.

In addition to those present to compete, the day also welcomed the Welsh Athletics athletes who have recently been announced and selected to represent Team Wales at the upcoming 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia between the 4th and 15th of April. The team were introduced to the crowds and congratulated on their achievements in securing their places on the plane to Australia.

Good luck / Pob Lwc to Tom Marshall, Rowan Axe, Jon Hopkins, Ieuan Thomas, Dewi Griffiths, David Omoregie, Dai Greene *, Ben Gregory, Andy Davies, Josh Griffiths, Osian Jones, Seren Bundy-Davies *, Melissa Courtney, Caryl Granville, Caryl Jones, Eli Kirk, Bethan Davies, Heather Lewis, Rebecca Chapman, Sally Peake, Carys Parry as well as the six Para-Atheltes included: Morgan Jones, Rhys Jones, James Ledger, Olivia Breen, Beverley Jones and Hollie Arnold as they now train even harder to prepare for Australia as the team above look to reach finals, set personal bests and chase medals on the Gold Coast.
