5 days later on Monday Evening (8th May) Carmarthen's track hosted another schools event...the Carmarthenshire Primary Schools Athletics Championships which has grown year on year. There was another fantastic turnout on the whole on May 8th with the warm and bright sunny weather certainly helping to attract visitors to enjoy the race day atmosphere which went on until 8.00pm.

This match started the primary schools athletics action for the summer as more than 35 Carmarthenshire schools attended. Once again the track was full, car park packed and food were quickly sold, with plenty of local talent out on show in front of family and friends. As well as the few hundred children participating, several hundred spectators and teachers watched the 14 event programme from the side-lines.

The events held were 70m Hurdles, 100m sprint, 800m, 4 x 100m Relay, Long Jump, Shot and High Jump. Schools were invited to enter up to 4 athletes per school in the track events and one per school in the field.

The championships could have not gone ahead without the support of the volunteers that helped out on the evening; many thanks from Hedydd Davies and the organiser team to those who contributed in any way...including Welsh Athletics officials and teachers/parents track judges recorders, field event judges, Sponsors and Presentation guests, St John Ambulance, Alfie Pics, Carmarthen Leisure Centre stewards and the Carmarthen Harriers members who sold plenty of refreshments during the evening.

All 70m Hurdles, 100m and Relays were heats through to a final while the 800m races were all time trials with points awarded in finals. After adding up, the scores was very close with the winners being decided on the final relay final. Ysgol Y Dderwen narrowly won the trophy with 42 points, one point head of Ysgol Iau Llangennech with 41! Ysgol Griffith Jones with 28 points were the third placed team. There was a total of 24 scoring teams having picked up points on the track and on the field.

Presentation of awards to the top 3 in each event at the end of the races was made by the Mayor and Mayoress of Carmarthen Cllr Wyn Thomas and Mrs Sylvia Perkins alongside Alan Evans, representative from the Carmarthen Accident Repair Centre.
