Extended May Bank Holiday Weekend: We've got an extra day to report on this week with 2 May Day events held in Carmarthen & Street as part of a very busy weekend for some, who competed twice in three days.

Monday: Carmarthen Mayor's Junior & Senior Fun Run Races 2017

The 36th running of the Carmarthen Mayor's Races was held today (Monday) and took runners through the streets of the town Centre, and it turned out to be its best attendance for a long time! It saw another bumper turnout from the 2 years old to the over 70's along with many more hundreds of people lining the streets. In the period 1982-2006 there were 25 Welsh road race championships held in conjunction within the Mayor's Race ranging from 5K up to the 10mile and half marathon championship.

Organisers confirmed that the final total was just under 800 fun runners, including 312 registered in the 5k in total, 100 people up on 12 months ago in 2016. The beauty of the Carmarthen Mayor's Races Fun Run is that they take place in the heart of the town centre, affording great opportunities to cheer on the runners. The event once again raised thousands of pounds for charity with many local groups and organisations benefiting. The wet weather in the early hours of the day did not stop the masses turning up to enjoy the race day atmosphere. Thankfully the conditions dried up as the action began on the road.

The day started with the Senior 5K Fun Run at 10.00am and was followed by a series of junior races for the following two hours - starting with the Year 1 and 2's, going up to the Years 7 and 8 before finishing off with a race for the nursery and reception children. The Mayor of Carmarthen Cllr Wyn Thomas and Mrs Sylvia Perkins Mayorees of Carmarthen was on hand to start all the races and present medals and trophies to all runners taking part.

All in all, another excellent day and a great success. The vests of the club were clear to see along the streets of the town being called out by the day's commentators Robert Lloyd and Marc Griffiths. Several categories were won in the senior and junior age groups and a big well done to all the children who participated, we know that a number of the junior member section were in attendance.

All finishers received their very own finishers medal. Thomas Jones having run the mountain race 2 day earlier then went on to win the overall winning time in the senior 5K. There was a also a club clean sweep in the Open Female Junior category for Year 9, 10 and 11.

A big thanks again to Noelwyn Daniel (Healthy Life Activities) who has worked tirelessly to get everything ready along with all the volunteers, marshals and staff from Carmarthenshire County Council. The team look forward to seeing you all again in 2018!

Monday: BMC Millfield PB Classic 800/1500/3000:

A few hours after the Mayor's Races had finished, once again as done in past years, a smaller group of U13, U15, U17 and U20 middle distance runners also flew the flag for CH at the Bank Holiday Monday's British Milers Club PB Classic, held at Millfield School Street in Somerset, South West England.

With some thirty races crammed into a hectic three hours, action was thick and fast involving 300 athletes, all aiming to run a new personal best and something to build on for the rest of the summer.

Four Carmarthen Harriers made the long trip for the annual British Milers club open event and all four achieved personal bests in seeded races that included some of the best junior runners in the UK, soaring up the rankings in the process.

Ben Thomas ran the 3000 metres, knocking 8 seconds from his previous best and recording 9.05 to finish the evening ranked second in Wales and 16th in the UK in this tough endurance event.

Under 13 Frank Morgan tackled the 1500 metres and in a touch race to a plan to record 4.42, his best ever and a time that saw him ranked top in Wales and 5th in the UK at this early stage of the season.

Tomos Rees running for the first time as an under 17 set an excellent time for the 3k runners 3.10km pace he finished well in a personal best for the 3km distance to finish in 9.30 and be ranked as 5th in Wales for the distance. Callum Lovatt ran hard to record a 4.42 and yet another Harriers PB and a good reward for the long trip.
