Extended May Bank Holiday Weekend: Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th saw the Louise Arthur in Carmarthen and the Red Kite Challenge in Aberystwyth with competition a day later in Yate & Cardiff, plus Carmarthen Throws

Carmarthen Open Throws April - Thursday 27 April

Two exceptional discus throwers were amongst those in action at the opening Carmarthen Open Throws Meeting of 2017 in Johnstown on Thursday 27th April.

Brett Morse (Cardiff AAC) Olympian and multiple British champion along with James Tomlinson (Pembrokeshire Harriers) Great Britain Youth / Welsh International and currently number 3 in the world, both again showed their true potential ahead of the summer competitions with an early season opener in West Wales. Watched on by a good crowd and great models for future stars, Morse threw out to 58.84m while Tomlinson also went beyond 50metres with a best of 55.08m.

The Carmarthen Open Throws meetings have now become a popular annual fixture on the Welsh Athletics calendar and has been going strong for 10 years, organised by the javelin coach Ralph Siggery and is held on the last Thursday of every month during the summer. The U13 plus competition gives young and senior athletes from clubs across South Wales and further afield the opportunity to improve on their personal best performances and continues to attract international throwers regularly.

Louise Arthur League U11, U13, U15 Match 1 of 4 - Saturday 29 April

Once again in 2017, Carmarthen's Johnstown track was the first venue of 4 as 55 Harriers juniors got their summer campaign underway which saw over 400 youngsters from across South Wales take to the track and on the field. The Louise Arthur League for U11 to U15 level welcomed eight teams to the West from Swansea, Pembrokeshire, Neath, Brecon, Bridgend, Llanelli, Barry & Vale and Pontyclun. On a full day's events - 7 hours in total - for the large number of spectators present to support, there were great performances with some making their athletics debuts.

The youngsters will now be looking to continue this fine form in the next few months. Coach transport will be available for all remaining matches.

Hosting a match required a lot of support and hard work from individuals, thank you to all the Harriers parents and officials who helped out on refreshments, team management and officiating, some staff who were setting up at 8am in the morning to ensure that the meeting flowed successfully.

Red Kite Challenge 2017 Fell Mountain Running - Saturday 29 April

From Carmarthen up to Ceredigion...Six Carmarthen Harriers travelled to the Devils Bridge in Aberystwyth to take on a formidable mountain race that included steep trails and a final descent that tested the nerves of all the athletes. Under 17 Thomas Jones was the star of the show winning his race with ease to secure the Welsh title and selection for the Welsh team to travel to Italy later in the year. In the same race, Iestyn Williams ran well to secure the bronze medal and a double place on the podium for the club, while thanks to Morgan Llewelyn in 7th as the third scorer, the boys were crowned as the Welsh team champions. In the under 17 girls, Ellie Kiff finished just outside the national medals with 4th place however took the West Wales gold medal in the process. Kiff will join Williams hoping for a call up to the national squad in the coming weeks.

Also winning West Wales medals were Megan Jones with a fine 4th overall in the under 15s and winning gold for being best in the West and team-mate Maddie Morgan in 7th grabbed the silver for finishing second of the regional athletes.

Cardiff 5K 2017 Race for Victory - Sunday 30 April

Whitchurch village proved the ideal setting for the race that takes runners on a flat and fast route around Whitchurch and Llandaff North. The entry had doubled for 2017 with over 1600 runners in the race and over 500 in the Welsh Championships. In addition to the race, which began at 7pm on Sunday, the event hosted live music, streed food and a pyrotechnics display

There was a good result for Sharon Leech in the Welsh 5km road championship held in Cardiff as she was the first across the line and won her F40-49 category with an end time of 19 minutes 21 seconds.

1st Round of the U17, U20 Young Development League - Sunday 30 April

On Sunday, West Wales athletes made the long journey to Yate, as part of the West Wales composite team (Pembrokeshire, Carmarthen, Neath, Llanelli & Sarn Helen) to compete in the first fixture of the UK Youth Development League. In dull and cold conditions at the Yate sports stadium, the team that made its journey performed well and will be looking for consistent performances over the course of the season. With more athletes available, the squad have another long journey coming up at the end of May when Cheltenham will be the next latest destination.
