The 113th staging of the annual championships again took place at Singleton Park at the end of a half term week and the route in this beautiful setting made for a tough course for the athletes. Clubs from all over Wales, including North Wales sent teams to participate and awards were shared around several clubs.

The best result of the day came in the Under 13 boys who easily took the Welsh title, despite missing a few key runners. 5 of the first 6 positions were taken by Carmarthen & Dyfed athletes showing the strength in depth in this team.

Carmarthen won a total of 18 medals (5 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze) Results this year was much better than last year.

Meanwhile, there were further team medals won. The Under 15 boys and Under 17 women both collected bronze while in the Primary school races for boys, the trio just missed out on gold but had to settle for silver. The Under 13 girls and Primary girls just missed out on a place on the podium, finishing 4th in each.

Gordon Orme won individual gold in the Masters men 70 age groups. Frank Morgan finished in the silver medal U13 boys while in the boys Primaries, Ifan Bowen was passed metres from the line as he finishing an excellently third.

Cross Country running is the winter base for all the success in middle distance running on the track and the road in the summer. The Welsh cross country championships every year is the most important cross country individual and team event of the year for the club.

A prime example is Dewi Griffiths who was a member of Carmarthen Harriers for eight years. Dewi won the Welsh senior cross country title in Swansea for the sixth successive year. Not only did Dewi win but he won by 87 seconds. Dewi has represented Great Britain many times at cross country, mountain running, road and track.

After very good and consistent performances, several athletes will now be waiting to see if they have done enough to get into the Welsh schools team to take part in the Mini London Marathon on April 23rd in the Under 13 and Under 15 age groups - selection will be done in the next few days.

The team has been chosen based on the results in the Welsh inter schools championships in November, Welsh inter regional in December, Cardiff cross in January and Saturday's Welsh championships.
