West Wales' Athletics squad came through a competitive competition on Saturday to have more success and win the Welsh Inter-Regional Athletics Championships overall trophy; (+ England Champs Bedford)

West Wales: athletes from Pembrokeshire Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Llanelli AC, Swansea Harriers, Neath Harriers and Run4All Neath.

The August Bank Holiday Weekend again saw the Welsh Inter-Regionals Athletics Championships take place for the 18th time for under 15, under 17 and under 20/senior age groups, this year hosted by East Wales in Brecon and also concluded another summer track and field athletics season. A wet start to the morning gave way to a reasonable dry afternoon up until the start of the steeplechase races, where a heavy downpour arrived which resulted in the final triple jump and discus events having to be cancelled because of safety.

Despite a few last minute drop outs, A strong squad of 130 West Wales travelled up to Mid Wales to compete in the red and black vest for the West. West Wales had won the overall team trophy every year since 1999 except in 2011 when the North Region won when it was held in Deeside and the success continued in 2016.

Throughout the six hour programme it was a very close battle between the West and South with points vital in each event. A number of fantastic performances and good relay results enabled the team to win by 40 points in the end.

1 West 999.5; 2 South 948.5; 3 North 672; 4 East 585

The Overall winning team trophy was presented to the two West Wales region captains Peter Maitland (Swansea Harriers) and Caryl Granville (Swansea Harriers) In addition, The West region also collected the overall male along with the Under 15s and Senior Men individual age groups.

Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each age group and event. In total, the athletes from West Wales won a big total of 124 medals including many winning performances along with a few new championship records.

At Penlan Arena, Brecon there was an excellent team spirit in the West Wales team and most of the team were present for the winning team photograph at the end of the competition. The six team managers Hedydd Davies, Peter Walton, Nathan Jones, Jo Salmon, Jeff Cooze and Dai Jones thanked all the West Wales athletes on their superb performances, commitment and their willingness to represent West Wales in the East.
