Dyfed v West Glamorgan Primary Schools Inter County Athletics Match - 13 July

The annual Dyfed v West Glamorgan Primary Schools Inter County Athletics match took place at Swansea University Track last week in an end of the season friendly meeting. All those that took part in the competition were selected after finishing in the top 4 at the respective Dyfed Primary Schools and West Glamorgan Primary Schools events throughout the past few months. The events on the evening included: 100m, 70m Hurdles, 800m, 4 x 100 Relay, Long Jump, Shot Putt and High Jump with medals awarded to the top three in each event.

On a sunny evening next to the Mumbles, it proved to be a good win for the strong West Glam team at home to equal the series in 2016 at one-one after Dyfed collected the top spots in the cross country fixture - Dyfed this time were second. All those athletes were congratulated on their achievement in reaching the final to represent their district after producing good performances and hard training.

Saturday 16 July saw the highlight of the WSAA summer programme with the Schools International Athletic Board’s Track & Field International, this year hosted by English Schools at the Julie Rose Stadium at Ashford in Kent. Margam Park, Swansea will be the venue for the cross country SIAB next year in 2017.

A team of 72 athletes (37 girls and 35 boys) from across Wales with 10 North Wales based athletes complimenting those chosen from the South were selected to represent the association after impressing selectors at the Welsh Schools Athletics Champs in Cardiff earlier this month.

The majority of athletes selected were from the Middle age grouping (Under 17s) with a small number of outstanding Juniors (Under 15s) given the opportunity to gain experience of this level of competition for the first time.

Carmarthen Harriers had four athletes who went as part of the team, 9 altogether from the Dyfed district and results are as follows:

Danielle Jones DT 31.87; Lydia Thomas 300H 44.56; Lucy Davies 1500SC 4.58.99 (broke her own Welsh Record by approx. 6 seconds!); Abbie Williams 3000 10.16.23; Shaun Zygadlo 100H 13.57; Aaron John 100NS + relay 12.10; Ben Thomas 1500SC 4.35.81; Thomas Jones 1500SC 4.38.81; Joe Worrall DT 42.05

Welsh Athletics League (U17/20/Senior) Event 3 - 17 July

The final qualifying Senior league for athletes including under 17 & 20 headed down to Carmarthen Leisure Centre for the third event on Sunday, with limited events in a 5-hour programme. Previous league meetings had already taken place in Newport & Brecon and had already seen some exciting competition.

Despite the SIAB event on the same weekend, It was a big disappointment from Welsh Athletics & organisers' point of view that there was such a small turnout of only around 160 entries, not only from the home club but in general - perhaps many did were not prepared to travel down West. However, well done to all the athletes who took part and thanks to all the officials, volunteers and refreshments that helped out during the day. Carmarthen saw 14 members compete, results include the following: the final of the league moves to Swansea University on Sunday 31 July.

Charles Griffiths 100 13.97; Aled Price 100 11.39 HJ 1.90; Dwayne Griffiths 400 53.20; Callum Lovatt 800 2.17.91; Paul Clarke 800 2.03.85; Iestyn Williams 1500 4.29.72; William Edwards HJ 1.98; Nicholas Jones HT 32.46; Joshua Thomas JT 46.56; Sam Bleach JT 43.27; Megan Rowe 100 13.62 400 66.33; Danielle Jones SP 10.42; Lauryn Davey SP 8.39; Amy Evans JT 28.41
