CARMARTHEN OPEN THROWS MEETINGS 2019 EVENT THREE OF FOUR - 27th June 2019

Throwers of all abilities and ages continued their track and field season at the latest competition in Johnstown on Thursday evening, 27th June at the Carmarthen Open Throws Meeting Fixture 3, as the track and field season in Wales entered the second half of the competition calendar. Despite the breeze, it was a perfect evening with a blue sky and the strong June sunshine.

The likes of Bethany Moule, James Tomlinson, Brett Morse and Aled Sion Davies as well as a few Paralympic athletes are just some big names who have been regular attendees at the throws meetings and continue to be great models for the future generation. They have gone on to represent Wales and Great Britain in top international competitions.

These throws fixtures have now become a popular annual fixture on the Welsh Athletics calendar and has been going strong for 9 years with familiar faces coming back each month. Arranged by Carmarthen & District Harriers AC, the series in West Wales takes place on the final Thursday of each month in April, May, June and July totalling four midweek meetings.

It continues to be organised by the Harriers club javelin coach Ralph Siggery. The under 13 plus competition gives young and senior athletes from clubs across South Wales and further afield the opportunity to improve on their personal power of 10 best performances.

Event number three of the 2019 season was well attended in all age groups with more than twenty five individuals altogether at Carmarthen Leisure Centre and saw athletes from eight clubs participate - Swansea Harriers, Pembrokeshire Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Pontyclun AC, Cardiff Athletics, Neath Harriers, Birchfield Harriers and DSW Para Academy.

The event was supported by a number of qualified and assistant officials from all over South Wales who ensured that events were run properly and eligible for season rankings.

Following a great night of Javelin & Discus throwing at the end of May, Thursday Evening's action in June saw the Javelin and Shot field events focused on this week with personal bests once again recorded from several throwers.

One of our participants this evening was Wales F44 Thrower Harrison Walsh and we were delighted to welcome him back to Carmarthen after his visit last month too. Going in the shot discipline this time, Walsh broke the World Record for the F44 Shot Put at the beginning of June at the World Para-Athletics Grand Prix in Grosseto, Italy with 15.73m!

In the evening sunshine, Walsh was one of three athletes from DSW Para Academy to participate. His round three performance of 16.21m confirmed his lifetime best and an unofficial WR. He also threw over 15 metres in rounds four and five with 15.17 and 16.09 respectively. Joining him from the Disability Athletics Group were Zachary Tandy (10.04) and Amelia Elliot (7.13) and it is very pleasing that the event can be open to throwers of all abilities.

Speaking to us on the open throws opportunity at Carmarthen, the DSW Para Academy athlete said: " Open Throws competitions are so useful to my development especially when they are well run. What I find best about the opens is that it's time spent working out technical issues in a competition setting."
