On Wednesday 15th August, Wales' top athletes competed at the Manchester International at the Regional Arena venue for the final International match of the summer season. One to make the journey up to the North West was under 20's Alicia Samuel who was in fine form following the Celtic Games International at the beginning of the month.
In the Women's guest 100m and streamed online by Vinco Sport, Samuel ran an excellent new personal best of 11.88 (wind +3.0) in one of the final races of the year as far as the outdoor track competition is concerned. Five took to the start of the first of two guest heats and she crossed in third place but in a very close finish with the other two English sprinters. Her sub 12 second time was confirmed shortly after on the big screen.
Later on in the evening, she was part of the Wales' 4 x 100m sprint relay squad. Wales were up against teams from England, GB Juniors, BAL/UKWL, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Iceland as well as a few other guests. England dominated again this year taking advantage of home turf with Team Wales finishing in fifth.

The end of the Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 track and field season came to an end in its usual way with the annual Welsh Junior League Plate & Cup Finals, held at the Swansea University Athletics Track over the weekend of Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of August.
Sixteen teams and around 600 competitors in total from across West and East Wales visited Swansea during the two-day weekend competition split up into two sets of finals. With the same events and age groups to the Welsh Junior League, the only difference this time round was the clubs were restricted to just two athletes per event.
On the opening day which saw constant drizzle throughout, the Plate Final was contested between Hereford & County AC, Blaenau Gwent AC, Cwmbran Harriers, Brecon AC, Neath Harriers, Llanelli AC, Pontyclun AAC & Barry & Vale Harriers and Rhondda AC.
Eight clubs from Cardiff Archers, Cardiff AAC, Swansea Harriers, Newport Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Rhymney Valley AC, Pembrokeshire Harriers and Bridgend AC turned out in their numbers for the second part of the weekend in the Cup with big fields in most of the events making it an exciting battle.

It turned out to be a good couple of days of juniors athletics and a big thanks goes to all the officials, staff and volunteers for their assistance in front of and behind the scenes. In the overall result, The plate final was won by Neath Harriers who scored 739 points and taking the title after taking control just after the half way mark and never looked back. Meanwhile 24 hours later, several of Wales' big clubs battled to become Welsh Champions.
It was Cardiff Archers who were defending the title from 2017 and after being close from start to finish, the winners were decided in the very last javelin field event result. Swansea Harriers were announced as 2018 champions victorious by only four points 1080 - 1076 from the Archers club. What a finish to the day!

Carmarthen Harriers with more than 80 having competed throughout the summer, were involved in the Cup final once again this year on Sunday after taking a top three finish in the league matches at Carmarthen, Neath, Brecon and Swansea.
A much better number of around 45 members contested the final this August compared to last year in Newport, with more athletes having been available despite the half way point of the summer holidays. Thanks to the athletes, parents and officials who turned up one last time in Swansea to support the end of season final and finish on a high.
